English electronic band Depeche Mode was founded in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. Dave Gahan (lead vocals and co-songwriter) and Martin Gore make up the band at the moment (keyboards, guitar, co-lead vocals and main songwriting).
Gahan, Gore, Andy Fletcher, and Vince Clarke made up the initial lineup of Depeche Mode, who entered the British new wave scene in 1981 with the release of their debut album Speak & Spell. Following the album’s release, founding member Clarke left, and the group recorded A Broken Frame as a trio. Gore assumed the role of primary songwriter, and in 1982, Alan Wilder took Clarke’s place, forming a lineup that lasted for 13 years. The band’s final albums of the 1980s, Black Celebration and Music for the Masses, established their dominance in the electronic music scene. A highlight of the era was the band’s June 1988 concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, which drew more than 60,000 people. In early 1990, they released Violator, which became an international mainstream success. The follow-up album, Songs of Faith and Devotion, released in 1993, was also successful, though internal struggles during the band’s recording and touring days led to Wilder’s departure in 1995. The band continued as a trio of Gahan, Gore and Fletcher until Fletcher’s death in 2022.
Depeche Mode have had 54 songs on the UK Singles Chart and 17 top 10 albums on the UK chart; they have sold over 100 million records worldwide. “Q” included the band in his “50 Bands That Changed the World!” list. In December 2016, Billboard ranked Depeche Mode No. 10 among all top dance club artists of all time. They were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and 2018, and were inducted into the 2020 class.
