AUDITORIUM PARCO DELLA MUSICA
Renzo Piano's Music Complex
The Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone opened in 2002, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano after a 1994 international competition. Its three concert halls (Sala Santa Cecilia, Sala Sinopoli and Sala Petrassi) are arranged as giant lead-clad "soundboxes" around the open-air Cavea, a 3,000-seat amphitheatre. Roman ruins discovered during construction were preserved on site and integrated into the design.
The complex is run by Fondazione Musica per Roma and has been the permanent home of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia since 2003. Its programme spans classical, jazz, pop and contemporary music, plus literary and cultural festivals. The summer season — the Roma Summer Fest — turns the Cavea into one of Italy's most distinctive open-air stages.
