TERME DI CARACALLA · ROMA
Imperial Ruins, Operatic Stage
The Baths of Caracalla were inaugurated in 216 AD under Emperor Caracalla, although the project had been conceived by his father Septimius Severus. Designed to serve thousands of bathers simultaneously, the complex covered some 25 hectares with frigidarium, tepidarium and calidarium halls. Marbles, mosaics and colossal vaulted ceilings turned daily hygiene into civic spectacle. The baths remained in use until 537 AD, and today the ruins form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre of Rome.
Teatro dell'Opera di Roma began staging opera in the ruins in summer 1937. Aida became the signature title and has been performed here more than any other work. The most famous night on this stage was 7 July 1990, when Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras gave the original Three Tenors concert on the eve of the Italia '90 World Cup final — the resulting album won a Grammy and remains the best-selling classical recording ever.
