Rome's Clay-Court Theatre

The Foro Italico tennis complex sits within the monumental sports city built in the 1930s on the slopes of Monte Mario in northern Rome, originally inaugurated as the Foro Mussolini in 1932 and laid out around the marble-statue-ringed Stadio dei Marmi. Tennis arrived in 1935 with the first edition of the Internazionali d'Italia, and the venue has hosted the tournament continuously on clay since 1950, one of the four pillars of the ATP and WTA tours alongside the other major European clay-court events.

The current Stadio Centrale del Tennis was rebuilt for the 2010 edition with a capacity of around 10,400, featuring a steel-and-concrete bowl designed for excellent sightlines on the central red-clay court. Ahead of the 2025 Italian Open, the wider complex was expanded again, raising overall site seating from roughly 36,000 to 55,000 and bringing matches inside the historic Stadio dei Marmi via the new SuperTennis Arena. Jannik Sinner, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams have all played here.
