Outer Courts of the Italian Open
The Foro Italico Ground refers to the outer courts and walkways of the historic tennis complex built between 1928 and 1938 as the Foro Mussolini, designed by Enrico Del Debbio and Luigi Moretti. Inspired by the imperial Roman forums, the area was conceived to host the 1940 Olympic Games that fascist Italy hoped to organise. After WWII it was renamed Foro Italico and gradually converted into one of Europe's leading tennis venues, hosting the Internazionali BNL d'Italia continuously since 1935.
Today the Ground gives access to the secondary stadium courts and practice areas, including the elegant Stadio Pietrangeli with its marble seating and statues, the SuperTennis Arena inside the Stadio dei Marmi, and 21 clay courts in total. For 2025-2026 the overall site capacity grew from ~36,000 to 55,000 spectators, with new hospitality areas, paths and food courts framing the matches played on the smaller outer courts.
