Events at Foro Italico - Ground, Rome

Foro Italico, Rome

The Foro Italico is Rome's monumental sports complex at the foot of Monte Mario, on the north bank of the Tiber. Built between 1928 and 1938 to designs by Enrico Del Debbio and later Luigi Moretti, its first buildings — including the statue-ringed Stadio dei Marmi — were inaugurated in 1932. Today the complex gathers the Stadio Olimpico, the Stadio del Nuoto swimming stadium and an extensive tennis centre, and every May it becomes the stage for the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, Rome's combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA tournament.

Courts and grounds

The tennis centre counts eleven clay courts, eight of which are used in competition. Three of them are show courts, headed by the Campo Centrale, built for the 2010 tournament with seating for about 10,400 spectators. Around the show courts stretch the ground areas of the complex — the avenues, outer clay courts and practice courts where much of a tournament day is spent watching play at close quarters.

Getting there

From the city centre, take metro line A to Flaminio and board tram 2 at Piazzale Flaminio; ride it to the Piazza Mancini terminus, then walk across the Ponte Duca d'Aosta to the main entrance of the complex. Alternatively, take metro line A to Ottaviano and continue on bus 32 to the De Bosis/Stadio Tennis stop. During the Internazionali, extra services run from various parts of the city.
