TEATRO DELL'OPERA DI ROMA
Where Tosca Was Born
The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, originally the Teatro Costanzi, was financed by builder Domenico Costanzi and designed by Milanese architect Achille Sfondrini. It opened on 27 November 1880 with Rossini's Semiramide and immediately became one of Italy's leading opera houses, hosting the world premieres of Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana (1890) and, most famously, Puccini's Tosca on 14 January 1900 — an opera set in the Rome of the score itself.
In 1926 the City of Rome bought the house and entrusted a full rebuild to architect Marcello Piacentini; the renewed theatre reopened in 1928 with around 2,800 seats, later reduced to today's 1,560. The Opera di Roma runs a year-round opera and ballet season and a celebrated outdoor summer season at the Terme di Caracalla, and counts Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo among the artists who have shaped its legend.
