Andrea Chénier Rome Tickets 2027
Andrea Chénier returns to Rome from 17 to 26 January 2027, with seven performances at Teatro Costanzi, home of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Umberto Giordano’s four-part historical drama combines political upheaval, romantic tragedy and some of the most powerful writing of the Italian verismo repertoire. Daniel Oren conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, while Marco Bellocchio’s production returns to the theatre ten years after its 2017 staging. Andrea Chénier at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma
Giordano’s opera, with a libretto by Luigi Illica, is set against the turmoil of the French Revolution. Its central character is inspired by the historical poet André Chénier, whose idealism places him increasingly at odds with the violent political world developing around him.
The drama follows Chénier alongside Maddalena di Coigny, the aristocratic woman he loves, and Carlo Gérard, a former servant who rises to political power during the Revolution. Their personal relationships unfold against a rapidly changing Paris, moving from the final days of the ancien régime to the Terror.
The score contains several of the best-known arias of the verismo repertoire. Chénier introduces himself with “Un dì all’azzurro spazio”, Gérard confronts his political disillusionment in “Nemico della patria”, while Maddalena’s “La mamma morta” has become one of Giordano’s signature soprano arias.
Marco Bellocchio’s Production Returns
The 2027 performances revive the staging created by acclaimed Italian film and theatre director Marco Bellocchio. First presented at Teatro Costanzi in 2017, the production was developed as a co-production between Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Teatro La Fenice di Venezia.
Gianni Carluccio designed the sets and lighting, Daria Calvelli created the costumes and Massimiliano Volpini is responsible for the choreographic movements. Daniel Oren leads the musical side of the revival, conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.
The return is particularly notable because Andrea Chénier has not been staged at the Rome Opera since that 2017 production. Rather than introducing a completely new interpretation, the 2027 season brings Bellocchio’s visual approach back to Teatro Costanzi with a substantially different group of singers.
Andrea Chénier 2027 Cast in Rome
The seven performances feature alternating casts in the three principal roles.
The title role is shared by Ivan Gyngazov, Martin Muehle and Gregory Kunde. Kunde also has a direct connection with this production, having sung Andrea Chénier when Bellocchio’s staging premiered in Rome in 2017.
Sonya Yoncheva and Angela Meade alternate as Maddalena di Coigny, while Ludovic Tézier and Ariunbatar Ganbaatar share the role of Carlo Gérard.
The supporting cast includes Cassandre Berthon as Bersi, Annunziata Vestri as the Countess of Coigny, Elena Zaremba and Annunziata Vestri as Madelon on different dates, Hae Kang as Roucher and Matteo Peirone in the roles of Fléville and Fouquier-Tinville.
Because the principal singers vary by date, visitors interested in a particular performer should check the scheduled cast when choosing their performance.

Andrea Chénier at Teatro Costanzi
All seven public performances take place at Teatro Costanzi, the principal theatre of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. The combination of the resident orchestra, chorus and a cast of internationally established singers makes this a fully staged Opera di Roma production rather than a visiting concert performance.
For visitors spending January in the Italian capital, the schedule offers a choice of weekday evenings as well as Saturday and Sunday performances.
