Verdi’s great Shakespearean comedy

Sir John Falstaff believes he has devised the perfect plan to improve his finances: he sends identical love letters to two wealthy married women, Alice Ford and Meg Page.

The women quickly discover the deception and decide to teach him a lesson. Their elaborate revenge draws Falstaff into a succession of comic traps involving jealousy, disguises, secret meetings and a memorable encounter with a basket of laundry.

Arrigo Boito’s Italian libretto draws primarily from Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, with additional material from Henry IV. The opera unfolds across three acts and balances broad comedy with remarkably detailed music and sharp observations about pride, love and human foolishness.

A new production for Rome

The 2026 staging is conducted by Michele Mariotti and directed by Tatjana Gürbaca. The creative team also includes Henrik Ahr as set designer, Silke Willrett as costume designer and Stefan Bolliger as lighting designer.

Acclaimed Italian baritone Luca Salsi performs the title role, joined by George Petean as Ford, Maria Agresta as Alice Ford and Violeta Urmana as Mistress Quickly. Marina Monzò and Yijie Shi appear as the young lovers Nannetta and Fenton.

The production will also be filmed by Rai Cultura for broadcast on Rai 3, RaiPlay and Radio 3, highlighting its importance within the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma season.
