The programme is performed by the étoiles, principal dancers, soloists and Corps de Ballet of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, accompanied by the theatre’s orchestra under conductor Andrew Litton.

Three influential visions of twentieth-century ballet

The programme pays tribute to Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, whose company first appeared in Italy in Rome in 1911. Each choreographer revisits music closely associated with the development of modern ballet while presenting a completely different visual and physical language.

The result is an ideal choice for audiences who want to discover contemporary dance, as well as experienced ballet visitors interested in seeing three important choreographic works during one performance.

Petruschka by Marco Goecke

The evening opens with Marco Goecke’s Petruschka, created in 2016 to music by Igor Stravinsky.

Inspired by the tragic Russian puppet, Goecke’s interpretation replaces traditional storytelling with rapid, fractured and intensely expressive movement. His dancers appear restless and almost electrically charged, creating a modern portrait of isolation, manipulation and the desire to escape.

The production features sets and costumes by Michaela Springer and lighting by Udo Haberland.

Afternoon of a Faun by Jerome Robbins

Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun offers a quieter and more intimate contrast. Created in 1953 to Claude Debussy’s famous score, the ballet follows two young dancers who encounter one another inside a rehearsal studio.

Rather than performing directly for each other, they frequently look towards the audience as though watching their reflections in an imaginary mirror. This subtle idea transforms the auditorium into part of the scene and creates a delicate study of attraction, self-awareness and youthful narcissism.

The original visual design is by Jean Rosenthal, with costumes by Irene Sharaff.

Le Sacre du printemps by Pina Bausch

The programme concludes with Pina Bausch’s celebrated 1975 interpretation of Le Sacre du printemps, set to Stravinsky’s powerful orchestral score.

Dancers perform on a stage covered with earth, creating a raw and physical environment in which movement, fear and collective pressure build towards the work’s ritual sacrifice. Soil gradually covers the dancers’ bodies and costumes, intensifying the choreography’s visceral and emotionally demanding character.

The production is directed and choreographed by Pina Bausch, with sets and costumes by Rolf Borzik. Eleonora Abbagnato and Damiano Ottavio Bigi are announced as part of the production.
