About the Event

I Due Foscari Rome Tickets 2027

I Due Foscari returns to Rome from 13 to 21 March 2027, with seven performances at Teatro Costanzi, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Giuseppe Verdi’s dark Venetian drama has a particularly strong connection with the city: the opera received its world premiere in Rome at Teatro Argentina in 1844. For the 2027 season, Riccardo Frizza conducts a revival of Pier Luigi Pizzi’s historic staging, originally created for the Opera di Roma in 2001 and reworked for this return. Baritone Nicola Alaimo leads the principal cast as Doge Francesco Foscari. Browse available I Due Foscari Rome tickets, compare performance dates and choose your preferred seats.

Verdi’s I Due Foscari Returns to Rome

Based on Lord Byron’s The Two Foscari, Verdi’s opera is a three-act tragedia lirica with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. The story takes place in 15th-century Venice and centres on Francesco Foscari, the ageing Doge, and his son Jacopo.

Accused of serious crimes and subjected to the authority of the Council of Ten, Jacopo faces exile while his father is torn between his responsibilities as ruler and his desire to protect his family. Jacopo’s wife, Lucrezia Contarini, fights desperately for her husband, while the powerful Jacopo Loredano pursues the Foscari family with relentless hostility.

The score belongs to Verdi’s early creative period, but already places unusual emphasis on the psychological conflict of its principal characters. Francesco Foscari is one of the composer’s substantial baritone roles, while Jacopo and Lucrezia receive demanding tenor and soprano writing that drives much of the opera’s emotional intensity.

Nicola Alaimo Debuts as Francesco Foscari

A notable feature of the 2027 revival is Nicola Alaimo’s role debut as Francesco Foscari. The Italian baritone leads the first cast, joined by tenor Kang Wang as his son Jacopo Foscari and Marta Torbidoni as Lucrezia Contarini.

An alternate cast appears on 14, 17 and 20 March. Lucas Meachem sings Francesco Foscari, Giorgio Berrugi takes the role of Jacopo and Marigona Qerkezi performs Lucrezia.

Marko Mimica appears as Jacopo Loredano, with Paolo Antognetti as Barbarigo and Carlotta Vichi as Pisana.

Because the three central roles alternate during the run, visitors looking for a particular singer should check the scheduled cast when selecting their performance.

Pier Luigi Pizzi’s Historic Production

The Rome performances revive a production closely connected to both Pier Luigi Pizzi and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Pizzi is responsible for the direction, sets and costumes, giving the staging a unified theatrical and visual identity.

The production was originally created at Teatro Costanzi in 2001, when Renato Bruson starred as Francesco Foscari. More than 25 years later, it returns to the same theatre in a version reconsidered for the 2027 revival.

Pizzi’s relationship with I Due Foscari in Rome stretches even further back. He designed sets and costumes for Opera di Roma productions of the work in the late 1960s and again in 1980, before taking responsibility for the complete staging in 2001.

For the 2027 performances, Riccardo Frizza conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, with Ciro Visco as Chorus Master.

An Opera with a Special Connection to Rome

Although I Due Foscari is set in Venice, Rome occupies an important place in the work’s history. Verdi’s opera received its world premiere at Teatro Argentina in Rome on 3 November 1844.

The 2027 performances therefore bring the work back to the city where audiences first encountered it more than 180 years ago.

That connection gives this revival an additional dimension beyond its Venetian setting. Audiences at Teatro Costanzi will see a work born on a Roman stage, presented through a production that has itself become part of the recent history of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

I Due Foscari at Teatro Costanzi

All performances take place at Teatro Costanzi, the principal home of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. The resident Orchestra and Chorus perform Verdi’s score under Riccardo Frizza, while Pizzi’s staging returns the opera to the theatre where this particular production was first seen in 2001.

For opera visitors in Rome during March 2027, I Due Foscari offers the combination of an important Verdi title, a production with a long history at the venue and a direct link to the city where the opera itself was first performed.
