Lucia di Lammermoor Rome Tickets 2027
Lucia di Lammermoor comes to Rome from 21 to 28 February 2027 in a new production created for Teatro dell’Opera di Roma at Teatro Costanzi. Gaetano Donizetti’s tragic opera is one of the defining works of the bel canto repertoire, combining vocal virtuosity with a story of forbidden love, family rivalry and psychological collapse. American choreographer and director Karole Armitage makes her Teatro Costanzi debut with the staging, while Giacomo Sagripanti conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. A New Lucia di Lammermoor for Rome
This is a new Teatro dell’Opera di Roma production, rather than a revival of an existing staging. Karole Armitage directs the opera, with sets and costumes by Daniela Ciancio and lighting by Valerio Tiberi.
Armitage brings an unusual background to the project. The American choreographer became known for combining classical dance with postmodern and contemporary influences, earning the nickname “punk ballerina” earlier in her career. Her Rome debut therefore gives the 2027 production a distinctive creative profile within the Opera di Roma season.
The production is especially significant for the theatre’s 2026/27 programme: the season itself takes its title, “Il dolce suono mi colpì,” from Lucia’s famous mad scene.
Donizetti’s Bel Canto Masterpiece
Composed by Gaetano Donizetti to a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, Lucia di Lammermoor is based on Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The opera is set in Scotland and centres on Lucia Ashton, whose love for Edgardo di Ravenswood conflicts with the ambitions of her brother Enrico.
Determined to secure a politically advantageous marriage, Enrico pressures Lucia into marrying Arturo. The consequences lead to the opera’s most celebrated sequence: Lucia’s descent into madness after the forced wedding.
The score contains several of Donizetti’s best-known passages, including the haunting “Regnava nel silenzio,” the Lucia and Edgardo duet “Verranno a te sull’aure,” and the extended mad scene beginning with “Il dolce suono.” The final act turns the focus to Edgardo and concludes with the tenor aria “Tu che a Dio spiegasti l’ali.”
Jessica Pratt and Xabier Anduaga Lead the Cast
The principal cast alternates across the seven performances.
Internationally acclaimed soprano Jessica Pratt sings Lucia on the opening cast dates, with Gilda Fiume taking the role on 23, 25 and 27 February. Pratt is particularly associated with the bel canto repertoire and has built much of her career around the music of Donizetti and Rossini.
Xabier Anduaga appears as Edgardo, alternating with René Barbera on 23, 25 and 27 February. Lord Enrico Ashton is shared by Germán Enrique Alcántara and Bogdan Baciu, while Michele Pertusi and Marko Mimica alternate as Raimondo.
The cast also includes Leonardo Cortellazzi as Lord Arturo Bucklaw, Sofia Koberidze as Alisa and Paolo Antognetti as Normanno.
Visitors interested in seeing a particular singer should check the scheduled cast for their chosen date before selecting tickets.
