A Racecourse on the Via Appia
The Ippodromo delle Capannelle, set along the ancient Via Appia Nuova on the southern edge of Rome, opened in 1881 as the city's principal flat-racing course. The current complex was redesigned and rebuilt in 1926 to plans by Paolo Vietti-Violi, the leading Italian racecourse architect of the era. The site covers around 140 hectares, with stables for up to 1,000 horses, training tracks, four grandstands and hospitality areas overlooking the gallop course.
Capannelle is best known for the Derby Italiano di Galoppo, Italy's classic three-year-old race over 2,200 metres run each May, and the Premio Roma. Since 2008 the racecourse has also hosted the Rock in Roma festival across June and July, with past line-ups including Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead, The Cure, Green Day, Arctic Monkeys, Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails.
