CIRCO MASSIMO
Ancient Stadium, Modern Spectacle
The Circus Maximus (Circo Massimo) is the original chariot-racing stadium of ancient Rome, dating to the era of King Tarquinius Priscus and expanded in stone under Julius Caesar and Augustus. At its peak it stretched 621 metres long and could hold up to 150,000 spectators — the largest sports venue ever built.
Today the grass valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills hosts some of Europe's biggest open-air events. The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Roger Waters and Genesis have all played here, and the venue regularly stages summer opera productions, Italian stadium tours and major public celebrations.
Circo Massimo Summer Season
The summer programme combines stadium-scale Italian concerts with major opera and orchestral productions. Highlights of the current season include:
- Gladiator in Concert — 3 July 2026 — Hans Zimmer's score live
- Riccardo Cocciante — 6 July 2026 — Italian songbook
- Aida — 12 July 2026 — Verdi's epic, in its natural setting
- Roberto Bolle and Friends — 14 July 2026 — ballet gala under the stars
- Carmina Burana — 31 July 2026 — Orff's mass-scale cantata
- Jovanotti — 12 September 2026 — Italy's beloved entertainer
