The Palazzo dello Sport was designed by Marcello Piacentini and engineered by Pier Luigi Nervi for the 1960 Rome Olympics. Its 95-metre reinforced-concrete dome and circular glass facade make it a masterpiece of mid-century Italian rationalism, and the building remains a landmark of Rome's EUR district.
Renamed PalaLottomatica and today PalaEur, the arena has long been Rome's principal indoor venue for basketball, boxing and concerts. The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Depeche Mode and Iron Maiden have all played here, alongside Italian top-flight basketball and major TV broadcasts.
